Just one week after my Saluki won a very competitive Bred By Exhibitor class at the Saluki Club of America National Specialty in Kentucky, she pulled one of her usual 'stunts' and sprinted down the garden after a squirrel, launching herself at the 7 foot high wooden privacy fence and pulling herself over the top. The squirrel, of course, was long gone so Hermione went off exploring. Unfortunately that exploration lead her across the busy Main Street of Beeton where she was hit by a car.
She suffered severe road rash to her left hind hock and a dislocated right hip. Whilst road rash doesn't sound like much, it was a really bad injury which tore away all muscle, tendons, ligaments and skin. Her hip refused to stay back in place and she eventually had to have the femoral head removed. Through all this, Hermione was a perfect patient at my vet clinic and was well loved by all the staff there.
During her recovery (which took two years) she underwent massage treatments with Lynn Potts at Why Knot and she loved her time spent on the sofa with Lynn. I could see her visibly relax and with eyes closed she would drift off to sleep whilst Lynn worked on her. The massage really helped her in many ways, not only to relax, but also for rejuvenating the atrophied muscles in her legs and body and working out the inevitable kinks from lack of use.
As can be seen from the pictures that Lynn has posted, today she is fully recovered, and although her left hock is fused and she is without a right hip joint, she runs like the wind in the field with the rest of my Salukis and was finally able to be bred and carry and whelp a litter of six successfully. She was a wonderful mother and her children are continuing her winning ways.
I have also had Lynn attend to one of my older Salukis who was suffering from an injury caused by crashing through ice. Every now and then he would hurt himself and carry his head to one side and limp. Lynn would come over and find the knot in his muscle and work it out so that he was comfortable again. Isaac looked forward to Lynn's visits and when she walked in the door with her equipment he knew right away it was time to get on the sofa and get comfortable so she could work her magic.
Thank you Lynn |
